Zimbabwe Troubles May Bust Borders
Zimbabwe's controversial re-election of President Robert Mugabe is bringing new pressure on South Africa to resolve the conflict, and raising military tensions with neighboring Botswana.
Leaders of the G-8 and several African nations scolded South African Prime Minister Thabo Mbeki at a meeting in Japan Tuesday, saying his efforts to mediate Zimbabwe's political crisis are not working, the Mail & Guardian of South Africa reports.
With violence against the Zimbabwean opposition escalating, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are pushing for harsher sanctions.
However, some African leaders, including Mbeki, warned against sanctions they said could potentially destabilize Zimbabwe, resulting in civil war.
At a press conference during the G-8 summit, Tanzanian president and African Union chairman Jakaya Kikwete and President Bush agreed to an additional meeting on the subject in August.
"Not all African leaders are in a position to support sanctions at this time," Bush aide Dan Price told allAfrica.com following the president's meeting with Kikwete.
Botswana, which is situated on Zimbabwe's southwestern border, has joined the fray by refusing to recognize Mugabe's contested re-election.
"We have no problem with the people of Zimbabwe, but we have a problem with someone who will beat up other people on the run-up to elections," foreign affairs minister Phantu Skelemani told Botswana's Mmegi newspaper.
SW Radio Africa also reported that Botswana has deployed an Army brigade at its border, to prevent post-election violence -- which has left 20 people dead since the June 27 run-off election -- from spilling over from Zimbabwe.
Mugabe, however, saw the move as provocative.
"If there are some who may want to fight us, they should think twice. We don't intend to fight any neighbors. We are a peaceful country, but if there is a country, a neighboring country that is itching for a fight, ah, then let them try it," Mugabe said to supporters last week.

IS ZIMBABWE BETTER OFF WITH A MEGALOMANIAC LEADER LIKE MUGABE OR A SUPPRESSIVE RHODESIA?
NOBODY IN ZIMBABWE IS BETTER OFF NOW! RHODESIA LOOKED AFTER ALL THE PEOPLE.
who ever may think zimbabwe was better with the suppressive rhodesia must go and see a pychiatric doctor . May be if you are being racial yes for the white people
I am an ex-ZIPRA cadre who has been resident in South Africa since the 1980's dissident era.I believe Zimbabweans have been let down by the entire international community as their plight matters not since then.It is naive for anyone to say Zimbabweans solve their own problems coz one needs external support to resolve any domestic political fiasco.
One other thing is there is no dictator who has been single-handedly been deposed by civilians save only for Nikolai Ceausescu in Romania, all others have gone through foreign military intervention. What is it about Mugabe? His army has morale at the lowest and huge desertions. What he has now are untrained militias masquqreding as police and soldiers.
ZIMBABWEANS ARE HUMANS IN NEED OF BEING FREED FROM A BEAST IN THE FORM OF ZANU(PF)/JOC.
I think that Mugabe lives in a fantacy world of its own, if he cannot see that he is causing more damage than good to the country and its people then really he needs new specticales and a human brain. I wish i could go there and say my say
MANY ZIMBABWENS STILL SUPORT MUGABE WHY ?
I think God must intervene and help out Zimbabweans.
MUGABE MUST GIVE UP BECAUSE HE IS KILLING ZIMBABWENS WITH HUNGER.
HE MUST ACCEPT HE IS BEING DEFETED AND THIS AFFECT US IN SA AND ITS ENOUGHT WE CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
United nation security council must help us, come into harare and drive mugabe away. he can even sent to exile for life. both young and adult are flowing away to the neighbouring countries just because of mugabe
crisis.Amin of uganda is even better than mugabe
mugabe should for benefit of everyone relinguish his power to anyone he can trust within his party and allow that person to negotiate with all MDCs. we are currently out Zimbabwe but still suffering like others back home.
I cant believe the south african preseident is doing nothing
he mR Mbeki has been in favour of Robert Mugabe all the time
that is why he is not agreeing to sanctions
he is just not man enough to admit this
he he does not watch out south africa will follow the same direction
Only God can solve this problem now
Mr Robert Mugabe should feel assame of himself
I cant believe his is even smilling
In Gods eyes he is sinning for killing all the people
I think smith's regime was even better than what is happening in zimbabwe.how come we are even afraid of our relatives because of this mugabe who is sending his idiots to kill and toture inocent people of zimbabwe.mugabe must go now, we are fade up of him.
IT LOOK,S LIKE EVEN THE G8 AND SADC LEADERS ARE AFRAID WITH MUGABE.IF ZIMBABWE HAD OIL THE G8 WOULD HAVE BEEN IN FOR FRONT SINCE THESE NO OIL IN THAT COUNTRY CALLED ZIMBABWE THE G8 CAN,T DO ANY THING.
If ICC prosecutor seeks arrest of Sudan president why cannot he seek arrest of Mugabe. Mugabe has committed as many atrocities as al-Bashir ... if not more?
I will never understand why has Mugabe and his
generals escaped being punished for their
atrocities, for the suffering of their people.
Mugabe, (we must think Zimbabwe) and his generals lead a wonderful life, food, lots of food, travel, entertainment, then suppression of their own people, yet they get away with it
why why why
Mugabe does'nt deserve to be called a president, he is a predator that kills his peaple for nothing. even if he can be given another chance to a be president he wont bring a change, he failed his country he was a president for more than 10 years hi didnt make zimbabwe rich. so he must let MDC rule the country.
IF RHODESIA HAVE THEIR FORESIGHT AND NOT BLINDED WITH GREED AND DELUSIONS OF RACIAL SUPERIORITY, IF THE BRITISH PLAYED IT RIGHT TO CORRECTED THEIR PAST MISTAKES OF COLONIAL STUPIDITY, ZIMBABWE AND THE REST OF AFRICA SHOULD BE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE TODAY. IF AFRICANS WERE TRAINED AND EDUCATED AND GIVEN THE FREEDOM TO SHARE THE GOVERNMENT EVEN IN A MINORITY RULE BEFORE GIVEN INDEPENDENCE.IF INFRASTRUCTURES WERE DONE, COMPULSORY EDUCATION AND HEALTH CARE WERE GIVEN PRIORITY,INTEGRATING THE CULTURE INTO WESTERN MENTALITY INSTEAD OF SACKING THE CONTINENT WITH THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES AND CHEAP LABOR, WE WILL NOT HAVE THESE WORLD PROBLEMS TODAY. I THINK SPAIN,GERMANY,AND PORTUGAL ARE BETTER COLONIZERS THAN GREAT BRITAIN. SANCTIONS DON'T WORK ,THERE IS NO GUARANTEE FOR MILITARY INTERVENTIONS AS IN THE CASE OF IRAQ. AFRICA NEEDS AN ECONOMIC AND MILITARY UNION WITH ONE CURRENCY LIKE EU SO THEY COULD HELP EACH OTHER AND SACK THE UNDESIRABLE LEADERS.FREEDOM FROM WANT,FREEDOM OF SPEECH, FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND FREEDOM FROM FEAR SHOULD BE OUR WORLD CREED.
now is the time, young captains, yes the future generals. to start to clean there hands and put on there clean uniforms. unstained by blood corruption and greed .and be be rid of the dragon with seven heads. the lord has removed the cloak of santans brothers and exposed them be swift thrust your sword and all will rejoice and you the the hand of god shall be rewarded with blessings from your brothers and sisters.
Mr Mugabe needs to be told that ZANU(PF) truthfully means "ZIMBABWEANS ARE NOW UPSET (PURE FACT)" and that is not a lie. We want the truthful MDC to rule and make a change for the better. Instead ZANU (PF) has caused a problem to the economy. It is so bad that its local currency is the MDC of the world i.e. "MOST DEVALUED CURRENCY".
Im worried about your presindant Tswanerai,s making tacks with 2 dadly davils lick RG & TM.Thy will jast finish with him jast the way thy did to J Nkomo.RG won this own rase he mast do wht ever he likes about Zim
I think world is scared of mr. no change in zimbabwe because nobody is taking action. Mr. Bush and Brown and Mugabe was the winner
What on earth would be the purpose of sanctions? How does this change the mind-set of a megalomaniac and murderer. If sanctions are applied, all the people of Zimbabwe will suffer even more! They are suffering greatly as it is. The president and his henchmen will not feel anything, since they already have money and supplies in their coffers to weather any storm. And if not they will just kill, steal and demand it from the innocent people of the country. If sanctions need to be applied, then apply
directly to Mugabe and his entourage.
Thank u Mr. Mugabe I support u through thick n thin because nobody wants to face u n this makes king of the world. Mr. Bush n Brown tried to face but u outstand n now its Mmegi n I am really sure that u will outstand him. GOOD LUCK Mr. Mugabe I wish u more 10 years as the president of zimbabwe
Mugabe is a dagon.Killing him is the only justfication for his satanic behaviour.
Mugabe is not harmful,I dont believe that only one man can hold the entire population hostage. Zimbabweans are not united which makes it easier for Mugabe not to leave the throne. To ensure that the MDC does not represent Britain in Zimbabwe, let both parties work closely with the Zanu PF without empty fears.
Poverty and Slavery mentality will always think Smith regime was better...there is no such.Dont be like the Israelites who prefered to go back Egypt while God is progressing them to the promise land.
The road to success is humpy Zimbabweans must never give up, they should use everything in their possession to make it happen. Backwards never, forward Africa goes through thisck and thin.
people are saying mugabe is the liberater from white ruler, that is not true NKOMO IS THE ONE who driver white away.nothing that mugabe done only killing NDEBELES helped by britain to rigged 1980 vote.britain is the one that caused all these mess that happening in ZIM.UN is good as mugabe they cant stop by CHINA & RUSSIA to sanction mugabe because UN know that both those countries are batchering people to their countries, mugabe took tactics from them. mbeki is was bribed on 2002 votes so he cant oppose mugabe.AN union leaders majority are thugs so thugs always support each other.mugabe dont even have strong army like NKOMO used to have,he use these stupit smelling BUMS militia.but all his supporters they must know the end is soon.BRITAIN ARE REGRETING FOR GIVING POWER TO mugabe.
Ask the ordinary people of zimbabwe whether they were happier under the Smith and a white government, whatever its drawbacks my be, they the barbaric government of Mugabe and black rule? They had work, they never starved, they had peace, they weren't constantly in danger of being beaten up and killed on a mere whim, they had courts where they could find justice for murder and they were independant, they had chiefs and elders who could intercede for them, their children were educated (in fact the old Rhodesia had the highest literacy rate in Africa) they had free medical services, they lived their daily lives in safety for 99% of the time. AND ASK THEM NOW ... WAS BLACK RULE WORTH IT?
ARE THEIR LIVES BETTER OFF NOW THAN THEY WERE UNDER SUPPOSEDLY WHITE RACIST RULE? ... And their misery and suffering goes on with no end in sight! But, of course, the rest of the world knew what was best for them. God help them all, the wonderful brave ex-Rhodesian black and white people of Zimbabwe, a hell on earth.
how can an african wish to be a slave just to be able to eat? what a shame
In 50 years time Africa will be exactly the same as it is now.
Colonisation merely interupted an inevitable process of linear decpretitude.
Mugabe is very popular amongst Africans because he says in public what they only say in private. His strongest supporters are African leaders !
Africans are the biggest racists in the world.
Thats why so many Africans love Mugabe. He is their racist hero.
mugabe should live the stool only thats can make zim to be in better i only say mugabe is a killer so pupuil who kill they deserve to be killed because in the bible says if you kill with a sword you will be killed by a sword the is no way if mugabe is alive because has spoiled so many things
Shaka down through Mzilikazi to Lobengula The Matabele tribes have beaten the people of that nation to death fortheir own gain and Mugabe is the fruit of their loin. He will continue to hand out the same punishment until he is physically restrained. This is not a black white racist colonialization arguement any more it is simply a Matabele that does not want to relinquish power and will hold on to the bitter end at any cost to his own people. In the past the Indunas who went down from Umgungunhlovo would be killed if they did not return to the nest with a human head and would kill their hunting partners to keep their own lives. I give you Bob Mugabe in a nut shell. God will not help in this matter as God supports the righteous and if Mugabe feels strongly enough that he is right then he shall be supported. Reason and action are the only tools that will topple him. Isolate and arrest him by surrounding and closing in as you would attack a Lion. I too want my homeland back!!
we love Zimbabwe,we our leaders,we love our indipendence and above all we love our land.so let those who clam to care[british and allies] about Zimbabweans came directly and talk to our trusted leaders. Why send someone else[Mbeki]?we do not mind working with the whites but ours interests first...........
As a young man who has since left his place of birth and moved overseas i have no sympathy for the people of zimbabwe. they have asked for this situation and this is what they want. The power to remove this man is in our own hands. There comes a stage when we must be held accountable and accept the blame. We want change from a one party state and lifetime leadership but the opposition party does not offer us that. Morgan Tsvangirai has been the leader and lost his bid for election three times now. Where else do you see that in the world where democracy is alive and well. We need new blood with new ideas and walso have the ability to take Mugabe on and play the game of politics with him and that man will unite a seriously divided nation. As he will gain the respect of all.
as all ways any county in africa what goes independent will go the same old route of one party states bad managentment bad debts and curruption same old story i am afraid just when will the west learn? ps my family or at least my mum are ex zims
Mugabe must get mooving coz his killing the people of Zimbabwe end i know why he doesn't want to let go it's becose he done enough to the people of zimbabwe, if he loses the presidency the people ojf zimbabwe will kill him and i want the people of zimbabwe to go home.
PEOPLE OF ZIMBABWE YOUR ARE IN PAIN, RID YOUR SELF OF THESE VULTURES WHO EAT THE FLESH OF YOUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS AND DECERCRATE YOUR ANCESTORS. MILATERY, THINK OF CEASER IN ROME FOR THE THE WILL OF ROME THE GOOD OF THE PEOPLE THEY WILL SHOWER YOU IN ROSES KISS YOUR FEET AND BATHE YOU IN OILS AND YOU WILL SAVE ZIMBABWE.TELL THEM, GO TAKE THERE LOVED ONES BUT GO NOW AS TIME MOVES AND THEY SHALL BE JUDGED AS THERE CALLABARATORS.THE WOLRD HAS THE POWER, IT IS THE LIGHT TO THE PATH TO THE ALFA & OMEGA
The Pesident of Zimbabwe Mgabe is a criminal and has become a dictator of that country and defied the Democratic process of government and he should be punished by the UN SECURITY COUNCIL AND HEAVY SANCTIONED SHOULD BE BROUGHT AGAINST HIM.
people of zimbabwe unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains and poverty. the solutin to the zimbabwean crisis does not lie with mbeki,au or the un.its in the hands of zimbabweans.we are the ones feeling the pinch.mugabe can stop tsvangirai and biti from delivering zimbabwe today, but, he will never stop 2million zimbabweans who will rise and take to the streets with one voice.there is power in numbers.a week of such protests will crumble the old man and will bring back the so much desirable zimbabwe.
As a white south african born in Durban,it saddens me to have personally experienced the pain and suffering in Zimbabwe by especially my black brothers and sisters while the rest of the World does absolutely nothing to put an end to the Dictators reign of terror! I applaud Ian Khama for his honourable stand against this tyrant and at the same I say to Thabo Mbeki - "be ashamed of yourself" you are a disgrace to Southern Africa through your lack of leadership.
in all honesty the zimbabwean situaion is very complex and only individuals from there can comment it it as they are the ones directly exposed to it. the free media is bias and anti mugabe and all expats are nt oblectviveto the situation, despite all that being said not even the staunchenest supoters of the ruling party can honestly back the ruling ZANU PF party without bias, both the MDC and ZANU PF are just powere hungry and the zimbabwean people are just desperate for change, not knowing wat it is goin to bring fro them.
its been said "better the devil you know than the one you dont know" zimbabweams are so blinded by stagnirari ( however you spell that) and his so called movement for democratic change, the reality of the situation is that mutambara, ncube and his goones are potentially just as bad as mugabe if not worse... i just wish we would all think in terms of watz best for the country rather than ourselves... weve all been through to much
the worst of a black leader is still better than white domination. to hail with ian smith and his so called better government.
this may be called a moment of disorder in african history, however we should be allowed to write our own history through mistakes and corrections. mugabe is still one of the great horoes of the continent.
being white, born and bred in zim.knee rhodesia,i can say that, having lived in rsa 4 20 years and now in eire,4 6 years, that the zim. people,of all creed and denomination, are amongst the nicest and most hospitable people anyone could ever hope to meet.how a despot such as mugabe can be allowed to inflict such pain and misery is beyond all comprehension.it boils down 2 2 things.firstly greed ,secondly, mental instability.the world as a whole, doesnt care as there is no immediate wealth to be had, such as oil.how it is that that warmonger bush enters the equation is unbelievable.the only thing he and the zim.people have in common is the colour of oil,and if u dont have oil then u may as well be white.the only consolation zim.now has is that mugabwe will one day die.that is not a religous thought, but one day satan will die.is that a religous thought?.mugabe needs to be taken, in chains as befitting a rabid dog,to geneva, and tried for his many atrocities against his people, and not be allowed to run to a save haven like idi amin 4 example.zim.has the world 2 thank 4 its present predicament.long live zim.
